Just wondering what a bride-to-be should be paying to have mehndi done on hands and feet...or perhaps, what the average is?
Reply Posted: 20-Jan-04 at 03:26:AM by monira
i think if you find price between $65 ,$75 than you should go for it.this days every body is doing it for $85 and up but there are some mehndi artist that they do it for the price up.

does anybody knows of mehndi artist that can come to victoria?
Reply Posted: 13-Feb-04 at 02:40:AM by karen
Try Hasna's Mehndi. I actually went for consultations with three other ladies to determine what I liked and how the colour would turn out. She turned out to be the best one because she had great designs and her mehndi turns dark. Although you would still have to use lemon and sugar and all that other stuff but you would need that for anyone's mehndi no matter what they tell u...so check her out. In my opinion you would have to go yourself to see what you are looking for

Hey, there is a girl in Surrey by the name of Ree who does awesome mehndi, she works with an indian bridal magazine. I had her do my mehndi and I was complimented god knows how many times. She does mehndi at the Bay when they have those huge things happening downtown. She books one bride a weekend. Why don't you people call her.

Help!! I just logged on today, and basically, here's the short end, I'm getting married in August, we have yet to book a place! or get a date in order, our takha is probably going to be early october. Do you guys know how hard is it to book a mehedhi person? how much time do you give? and who's reallyyyyyy good!
Reply Posted: 25-Sep-04 at 03:48:PM by
It's not that hard because there is some flexibility as to when u can get it done, can be a 2 or 3 days before your wedding. I think its harder to book make-up and stuff cuz everyone needs someone on the same day at the same time. I heard that Iti is really good or Raquella, good luck!!!

Hi guys,
I was wondering if you guys know of anyone who does Gold and Silver mendhi? And if anyone has had it done before, it is good or does it come off really easily? I am also wondering how it would have came up in the pictures? Thanks!
Reply Posted: 26-Nov-04 at 10:35:PM by
Theres no such thing dim bulb! It's glitter applied over mehndi or paint...mehndi is natural and comes in reddish or chemicalized to make it black
Reply Posted: 27-Nov-04 at 10:33:AM by High maintenance bride
You dont have to be so rude in your comment; I was just asking a question. I didn't mean to imply that mendhi was gold and silver...So..for the purpose of people who are so critical of working...Does any one know of a mendhi artist who paints on gold or silver mendhi designs?
Reply Posted: 27-Nov-04 at 06:26:PM by Bridezilla
I think that the majority of mehndi artists will do it. Some will provide the pint while others want you to buy it and they will paint it on. For optimal effect, it should be done the morning of the wedding as it will come off fairly quickly. Most artists charge between $50-$100 dollars extra for the extra trip out. If you want it re-applied in the evening, you have to pay again. Many I have talked to have said you can just follow your mehndi design with the paint yourself...it's easy and free. You just follow the lines they have already made with the regular mehndi and put it on specific places just to highlight rather than paint. Either way it looks good. Iti does a really good job and others have said that they like Parm Tak (I don't like thick mehndi so I preferred Iti's intricate detail!) It all depends on your tastes so get out there and start talking to them!

Thanks for all your help! It's so easy to get a rude comment, but hardly any useful advice. Thanks again.

Opps! sorry.. guys just a questions has anyone gotten mehndi w/ those jewels put on also? my question is - do the jewels actually last? or do they tend to come off? and are they applied the morning of the wedding? or actually when the mehndi is originally applied?
thanks!!
Reply Posted: 01-Dec-04 at 01:32:PM by
The jewels follow the same format for the paint. They are generally applied on the morning of the wedding and ones that fall off have to be re-applied in the evening. Again, they require a seperate trip out and some may ask you to provide the rhinestones. You can also put them on yourself if you feel comfortable doing so. It's not that difficult. You can always have a friend help you in the morning!

Raquiya's mehndi is really good - I would recommend her. If anybody wants her number or some pics (although maybe not the best pictures since they were taken by my friends not so great camera) check out ubcmasala.com and go under picture gallery feb 28 2003...okay so the pictures we took are not the best (in the sense that you cant really see the mehndi and defeats the purpose!) but call her up (her info is on that site) and look at her portfolio. She has volunteered her time and effort for many of our clubs events at ubc - and is a very nice person I dont recall how many days the mehndhi lasted for, but I do remember she had great designs and it was a nice dark maroon color.
Hope this helps!
Sheena

Beant at Elegant Mehndi, did my mehndi and she used rhinestones. Her rhinestones stick for a few days. She also does glitter and color mehndi. You can check her portfolio under the mehndi section.

The jewels are put on the morning of your wedding or just before your reception. They stay on for many hours. I got rhinestones put on from Elegant Mehndi and they stayed on until the next day. She even gave me a few extra in case any did fall but they stayed on. She has different color stones too to match your outfit.

All everyone was talking about was her style and how fast she does mehndi. She had also brought on assist along with her who was really good. I would have to reccommend Parm for her unique designs and dark mehndi colour.

I would rather have my mehndi fade quickly....i think it doesnt look professional when you are working with CEO's, CFO's and have all these patterns on your hands!!! But that is my opinion...I will definitely be booking raquiya if the mehndi fades faster!

why r u ashamed of your culture?
Reply Posted: 12-Apr-05 at 10:50:AM by to the last post
why are you ask sandy if she is ashamed of her culture. where i work for hygene reasons we can not have mehndi on our hands. i've already booked raquiya for my sedding in the summer. she has done mehndi for many of the brides in our family. she is super nice, she has donated her time to charity causes and i have never heard anyone say anything bad about her. plus, her cost is reasonable. if you get the bridal package, you get your bridal mehndi which includes both hands and feet, plus 25 individual hands. the cost is 85 for the bride and 65 for the 25 hands.
Reply Posted: 12-Apr-05 at 11:28:AM by pk
i'm an executive who works with a CEO, CFO, etc and i don't think there's anything wrong with having mendhi on my hands while doing so. having patterns on my hands doesn't make me any less professional or qualified to be working with them. it's part of my culture and they'll just have to deal with it. in fact, i'm sure most of them will find it intriguing considering how trendy henna is with the white folk. i'm planning on wearing some of my churra too (all of it won't fit under the sleeves of a business suit, otherwise i'd wear it all) but, you're right, it's a matter of personal opinion/choice. i just think that you should do what you want based on what YOU like, not on what other people will think.
Reply Posted: 12-Apr-05 at 02:09:PM by agree with pk
when i got married, i still had mehndi on my hands and wore my entire choora (on most days) and had so many ppl interested and intrigued as well. as a professional, i wasn't worried about wearing it to work...i never even thought twice about it. it's nice because ppl also know you're just recently married and they're curious about our culture/weddings/traditions, etc.
Reply Posted: 12-Apr-05 at 02:43:PM by sandyy
Hey,
I am not ashamed of my culture, I just am not a big fan of mehndi. If I had it my way I would not even do the whole mendhi thing for my wedding, but to keep up with tradition and my mom's request I will be doing it.
Yes I work with CEO's and CFO's and do not think it would look professional to have my hands all stained with red dye while I am at work, but again that is my opinion and I know others love having mehndi. I am not putting down anyone who does choose to wear mehndi or the full churra after the wedding. If that is what you want then you should do it.
Why is it that anytime someone gives an opinion people get so offended? I am not disresepecting or ashamed of my culture but do not get why people look down on others who are stepping away from tradition a little bit. Whether its wearing a white wedding gown to a reception, not liking mehndi, or not wanting to wear the churra, some people (not all) assume the person is white washed. We live in Canada and times are changing.
If my previous post offended anyone I am sorry and maybe I should have voiced my opinion about mehndi a different way.
Anyways good luck with your wedding planning.
Reply Posted: 12-Apr-05 at 04:27:PM by pk
sandyy, i'm not sure if you're refering to my post, but i wasn't trying to criticise you or put you down, nor was i offended by what you had to say. everybody is free to do as they wish. all i was trying to say was that, in my opinion, the mendhi and churra don't take away from professionalism in the work place, and that people who do like mendhi shouldn't think twice about wearing it to work just because they're afraid of what others will think. i wouldn't sacrifice my culture for anything mainstream or conventional, whether it be work related or otherwise. that's not to say that your opinion is wrong and mine is right, or vice versa. i just felt like posting an opposing position, so i did.
Reply Posted: 13-Apr-05 at 08:30:AM by rajanni
I agree with those two girls who think it is a part of culture and that other girl should not have made a comment about it detracting from professionalism. The other girl who was talking about hygiene reasons for work is totally valid but the one who said she doesn't think red "dye" looks professional should have just said she doesnt want to have it on. Yes, we do live in Canada now and therefore people should realize that the customs and values of other cultures are just as valid. Like that other girl said, most people are going to be intrigued by it. FYI, it's not red dye. That itself is patronizing, like we are some jungle people. It's a plant extract and you should refer to it as henna or mehndi because it has a cultural significance. Even tatoos are significant to people who have them...some tribal tatoos are used as identifiers. I, for one, am proud ofmy cultural traditions and will be keeping my mehndi on as well as my churra for as long as possible and I DO work in a professional environment!
Reply Posted: 13-Apr-05 at 11:31:AM by bride
i was the one who replied in regards to not being allowed for hygene reasons. many ppl are ignorant and do not know it is part of the culture. so what they end up doing is instead of asking what it is, they go and complain that this person had something on their hands and it is not appropriate. just a little while ago i had mendhi on my hands for my friends wedding and many ppl knew what it was and others didn't. the ones that did, asked tons of questions because they loved it.

i agree with the last poster. except for one or two comments, this topic has been quite respectful of other people's opinions. they're debating without making personal attacks, etc.
with respect to wearing mendhi to work. i'm not an executive and/or professional yet, but i do work in an accounting firm and i'm going to wear whatever is left of my mendi to work proudly. i've gone to work with mendhi before and all the gora seem to like it. but there's nothing wrong with wanting it to fade quicker. it's all about personal choice.

I've seen the rhinestones at Shingaar Emporium on Scott Road (Delta side).

i've seen them at Red Ginger cosmetics in metrotown. they also have the different nail tatoo things, i bought ones that glowed in the dark - look very cool when clubbing.

Thanks!

did you book another mehndi artist? is that why don't you want to use her? because i saw her at the wedding show and she was going a mile a minute with the mehndi.

i already have a mehndi artist that im happy with. i just wanted to buy the paints and the stones. my artist can do the paints and stones but i'd just rather buy them and have my makeup artist do it the morning of the wedding.

try Red Ginger Cosmetics
I DID GO FOR SAMPLES TO MANY MEHNDI ARTIST.AND LET ME TEL U WHO I FOUND THE BEST:HASNA'S MEHNDI AND ITI'S MEHNDI ARE THE BEST ,THE COLOR WAS VERY DARK RED AND IT LAST 1 TO 2 WEEKS.ROQAY'S MEHNDI THE COLOR WAS GOOD BUT IT LAST 4 DAYS ONLY IF I AM PAYING MONEY I WANT MY MEHNDI TO STAY AT LEAST 1 WEEK.ELEGANT MEHNDI THE COLOR IS OK BUT HER DISGNS ARE NOT THAT GOOD.

Hey Girls, I just got married two weeks ago, and I had Iti Chandra do mine.. I saw her work and I met up with her - really sweet girl. Anyways, she ended up doing a Fabulous job! Everyone LOVED my mehndi, and it turned SO dark, its actually still on my hands on the inside and on my feet. Her designs are awesomebecause they are not all traditional, and altho it takes time (shesnot speedy)it is totally worth the wait! I highly recommend booking her!

Hi sandee 24 - as far as I know, the only way to get mehndi a dift color is to add foodcoloring or something along the line. Maybe just try asking the mehndi artists listed in this post and see if they can work with you. As for the glitter and rhinestones, pretty much all of the artists can do it if you ask them (or you can buy the glitter/rhinestones yourself from Micheals or some other craft store and do it yourself..if you dare!)

I had a consultation and noticed that the mehndi was much darker on my finger and on the palm of my hand than it was on the back of my hand and on my arm.
I also noticed that the darker parts (my finger and my palm) faded really fast. By the third day I noticed it fading away and by the 4th it looked pretty crummy (particularly on my palm)
Is this typical when it comes to mehndi or should I be looking at having a consult with another artist?
(btw the lady I saw has bee highly recommended and is I'm pretty sure considered one of the best in the business)

I know Fatma's mehendi colour and designs are excellent. On my sister's wedding the bridal and the bridesmaid mehendi was done by her.I have her business card and the contact # on this card is 604-543-0781 / 778-227-3809
Reply Posted: 19-Nov-05 at 12:07:PM by bride2b
Hi Michelle -
usually the palms and fingers take up more of the color b/c that area is lighter/less pigment than the arms/back of hand (no matter what skin color you are). Also, the more you wash your hands etc, the faster it wears away..and again it will most likely take away the color from the palms/fingers. Technically, you do the mehndi a day or 2 before the wedding and it should be able to last atleast 4-5 at the color you want. Ask the person you did a consult with how long her mehndi is supposed to last. I think the person you said you were booking is known for her excellent designs, although ppl have commented on it not lasting that long (Im booking her anways, because I really just want it for wedding and reception and thats all...and will be doing it a night before).
Reply Posted: 21-Nov-05 at 02:17:PM by Michelle
That's true.. I realy only need it to look nice for one day. If it's starts to look ghetto after a few days I guess I can scrub it off.

Hey Girls!!.Did u go to the asian wedding show in Vancouver? Well I was lucky to visit this show as I had all my queries and worries resolved by the mehendi artiste over there. I sampled all the artiste's designs and also asked all questions about dark color, rhinestones and sparkles. I liked the designs and color of fatma's mehendi and also hasna's mehendi. These two were really good.
I booked fatma of fatma's mehendi for my wedding because of the dark burgundy color and exquisite Indian designs which I saw in her photo album. She told me she gets her henna from Bombay. The sparkles and rhinstones which she had put on some people at the show had to be seen to be believed!!! I would highly recommend fatma's mehendi to all would be brides

I was at the wedding show this weekend and I also got samples done by all the different mehndi artists . The darkest color was the mehndi sample I got done from Beant. Her business cards were hot pink and she was in a booth a few rows away from all the other mehndi ladies. I only noticed rhinestones on her all the others just had glitter. I really liked her designs and I just booked her today for my wedding.
Reply Posted: 22-Nov-05 at 08:04:PM by Nina
I agree with kundanset. I got a sample done from elegant mehndi and the results were great! She had so much variety in her album and her color is really dark. I really like her rhinestones.
Reply Posted: 23-Nov-05 at 07:48:AM by JG
I agree that Beant is good. The thing about the rhinestone though, she charges $1.00 per stone. At least that's what she charged my friend this summer. So if you're going to India, you may just want to pick up some of your own. I'm sure that you could even get them from here for less.
But her menhdi is really nice and rich in colour...it lasts for a while too.

Reply Posted: 08-Jan-06 at 05:27:PM by bride05
Jag,
I was at a wedding a few weeks ago where the bride had color in her mehndi. to tell you the truth, it looks alright but it was rough feeling. Like there was a texture to it. I think if you get the right person they will be able to do it dark for you? It also depends on the natural oils in your hands.
I had Iti do mine, and mine turned out VERY DARK.It wasn't red, it was more of a dark brown almost.

Hi,
Just so that you should know; black henna is an illegal product. Anyone professional mehendi artist who uses black henna is putting their profession at risk. The additives in the black henna have a corrosive effect on the skin and can scar someone for life... You check out the harmful effects of black henna on the web (Google). Please be careful brides, the last thing we want is to end up with permanent damage to ourselves on our wedding day or otherwise...

Hi girls,
Anyone have good or bad experiences or insight on the work of HASNA, FATMA OR BEANT...I have consultations with all 3 and everyone seems to speak highly of them on this forum. Who would you reccommend?
Thanks!
Reply Posted: 13-Jan-06 at 12:11:PM by jag
I did not know that Black mendhi was illegal. I just thought it looked way better then the original Red.
Reply Posted: 13-Jan-06 at 12:31:PM by JG
Its has properties that are very detrimental to your skin. A lot of the black mendhi contains lead. Its because of the lead poison factor that Health Canada advises against it.
Anyways, on a "lighter" note, try Elegant Mendhi by Beant, its rich in colour, very dark, and lasts a fair length of time. With her menhdi you can take it off once it dries and the colour comes to be fabulously deep.

I heard that iti had a baby this spring that is why she is not around too much. Also I heard from a friend that Hasna is very expensive. I heard that she came to do mehndi on a bunch of ladies and just kept doing the designs everyone thought they were 5 dollar ones but when she gave the bill at the end it was really high. My friend was really disappointed. She does not recommend her at all.
Reply Posted: 16-May-07 at 12:01:AM by sunny1
one thing I noticed about mehndi artists, because I have been looking around and going for consultations myself, is that besides iti and elegantmehndi all the others do big designs I guess they are arabic, but these 2 do more detailed work. With iti I noticed she does the same design on all her brides. Just some info to share.Prices are comparable. Some charge 150 up to the wrist others start at 85. But I did not mind paying 250 for the design I picked. Hey thats half the price of 1 suit. I think that its worth it. Consider how much you spend on makeup. I also got the glitter for the evening which was an extra 100. But you only get married once.

Hey Jassi,
did you try Iti's mehendi too? I heard Fatma and Iti work together and use the same mehendi- but Iti's design's are more unique and detailed. I went to Iti for a consult, but my mehendi turned black- I think I might have left it too long. Any thoughts on this?
Reply Posted: 06-Oct-07 at 09:48:AM by 08bride
Hey,
I also went to Iti and left mine on for about 5.5 hours and it turned a really nice deep redish colour. How long did you leave yours on for?
Reply Posted: 07-Oct-07 at 07:06:PM by Memsaab
Iti told me to leave it on all night and avoid washing my hand for the next day- which was exactly what I did. I think maybe I should go and get another sample done and leave it on for only about 5 hours or so. Has anyone tried Hasna? SHe has scheduled over 4 appointments with me and has not kept one- she is highly unprofessional from my personal experience but I hear her mehendi is good.

I booked Fatma for my wedding in july next year. I have known for two years.. she did my cousin's wedding and also i have kept in touch with her as well due to our run-ins. she is a very nice friendly person, very genuine and has a huge range of designs from traditional to more modern designs. i would totally recomend her

I think I am going to book Fatma for my wedding too- her mehendi turned a nice burgundy and not a dark black on my hand and Fatma is so nice and so easy to get a hold of and returns phone calls promptly. I tried Hasna's mehendi too,but I don't think I left her mehendi on my hand long enough, so I'm not really sure what her colour will turn like on my hands, also Hasna is EXTREMELY difficult to get a hold of and does not return phone calls promptly and forgets consult appointments from what I heard from other friends- this worries me if she would even show up on time for my mehendi party? But my question is, who's design's are better? Hasna's or Fatma's??
Reply Posted: 18-Oct-07 at 08:23:PM by july wedding
Hasna's desgins are good, but Fatmas designs are really detail oriented. My cousins mehndi looked fabulous and the colour came out nice and dark
Reply Posted: 18-Oct-07 at 08:29:PM by Jubilee
Thanks for your reply, I think it will have to be Fatma for my wedding, I still haven't heard anything from Hasna! My only concern was that from my consult, Fatma's design was really thick, and I want a thin-detailed design and thick designs always come out darker. So I'm wondering if I get a thin-detailed design for my wedding day- will the colour be different?
Reply Posted: 19-Oct-07 at 10:18:AM by july wedding
hello,
Fatma did really nice and thin designs for cousin and the bridesmaids and the colour came out really nice and dark. you should definetly get a consultation, because everyone's skin types are different

I picked Hasna for my Mehndi artist for the wedding... She's quick and original. I didn't want the really really thing designs as you cant really see the work unless you look close. I went with Hasna... she charges differently hourly or per person which is always a plus. She just had a baby though which is why you may not be getting quick replies from her. But keep calling, she'll call you back

Our wedding is also summer of 2008. We booked Elegant Mehndi for our bridal and family mehndi. We have actually used her for all of our family weddings over the past 5 years. She is really friendly and on time. Her color came out really dark.If necessary she brings her daughters and that way if you have alot of people they dont have to wait too long. I reccomend Beant.604-761-6110. Her daughter Jenny does makeup and hair. They usually give us a discount for booking both.

I am looking for a mehendi artist in TORONTO! Actually, I live in Brampton [Ontario]. Does anyone know of a mehendi lady they can recommend? I like the traditional intricate Indian designs and love dark dark mehendi. So far, I called Punita [Punita's henna] and she quoted me $350 for both hands and both feet [bridal designs]. We had Gurpreet come do our mehndi and ladies night. Her prices were by far the cheapest and she does amazing work. Highly Recommended!! Her number is (604) 727-8424

Hey!
I booked Hasna...does anyone know a bit about her work? My friend had her and her mehndi was beautiful

I book Iti. She does both Arabian and Indian style and prices are according to what you pick. At her consultation she shows you a book of her work. I really liked it and I'm paying 300$ for just myself (thats including travelling fee).
For my bridesmaids and relatives I booked Nazil, and she charged $195 for 2 hours and then 50$ for any additional hours. I thought this was reasonable.
